United Scrap Metal, Inc. was established in 1978 as an independent, privately held scrap metal recycler. Marsha Serlin, founder and president has owned the business from its inception developing the business from an initial $200 investment to one of metro Chicago's largest and fastest growing full-service recyclers.
During that time, United has become recognized as one of the most energetic and innovative in the scrap metal industry. Its reputation for professionalism and exemplary service has led to long-term relationships with many of the Midwest's top industrial companies.
Our mission at United is providing clients the right service, the right price, and making it easier. We take this mission very seriously and commit our best efforts to continue making it a reality for each and every United Scrap customer. While it is easy to merely say that customer service is important, we are quite proud of being named the 1996 National Small Business Subcontractor of the Year and the 1996 Best Business Practices Enterprise for Customer Satisfaction as judged by Arthur Andersen. Our entrepreneurial spirit is reflected in Marsha Serlin's selection as a finalist for Ernst & Young's 1997 Entrepreneur of the Year Award and as the recipient of the 1997 Grant Thorton Executive Woman of the Year Award. United is equally proud to be the recipient of the 1998 Outstanding Recycling Business Award sponsored by the Illinois Recycling Association.
